Sharing a border with the largest protected
wilderness area in the world, part of which is the Glacier
Bay National Park, and offering vistas of North America’s
longest and deepest fjord, Haines, like Alaska itself, is
a place of superlatives. Complementing the natural beauty,
over 200 Bald Eagles nest in the Haines area, so keep your
camera at the ready!
Locals like to call Juneau the
town “Where Adventure Runs Wild.” Visitors are
likely to see brown bears, whales, and many other magnificent
creatures during their stay. Juneau is only accessible by
water or air, and offers spectacular views of Alaska’s
famous glaciers and towering mountains. For easy sightseeing
from downtown, take a tram up the side of Mt. Roberts!
Ketchikan is a fun and popular
port within the Inside Passage on many Alaskan cruises. You
may be surprised to learn that it is also one of the top 100
art communities in America! Native art abounds here, including
the largest collection of totem poles in the world. While
you’re here, be sure to keep an eye out for bald eagles
nesting atop a Sitka Pine.
Visitors
to Skagway will be greeted by the words “Welcome to
Gold Rush Country!” This gateway to the Klondike honors
its auspicious past by recreating it with a charming Historic
District, complete with boardwalks lined with false-front
buildings. To this day, the streets ring with the sounds of
bar room pianos and boomtown crowds, all of which complement
its exquisite natural beauty.
There’s a reason why Vancouver
is a favorite destination for seasoned travelers! A cosmopolitan
starting point for many Alaskan itineraries, it offers breathtaking
views of the ocean, bay and the surrounding mountains. Go
whale watching, comb the streets of the Victorian-era Gastown
district, or pay a visit to the infamous nude Wreck Beach.
